  1. SPACE SWIMMERS 2 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the paperback, "The Space Swimmers," by Gordon R. Dickson. Published by Ace, 1979

Once I decided to draw the three figures in this picture I had to decide on the relative position of each figure in the composition. Since the diver is the main focus of the scene I started by drawing him a third of the way down from the top and a third of the way in from the right side of the paper, which is one of the four "Golden Mean" positions that is most comfortable for the viewing eye.

I then drew one of the creatures in front of the diver and the dolphin above and behind him, to add depth to the scene.. To make the dolphin appear behind the diver I drew bubbles from the diver rising upward in front of the dolphin. If I had wanted the dolphin to appear in front of the diver I would have had the bubbles rise behind him. If you place your finger over the bubbles the dolphin shifts in front of the diver, and when you remove your finger he jumps back behind the diver.

The real satisfaction for me comes not only in creating objects in a picture, but in drawing them in a way that gives them "life," and "movement," and a "relationship" to each other that gives the illusion of movement and reality to the scene.
